Utah Legislature and the Gangs

Utah Legislature

It looks like the gang problem has finally starting to pop up on the legislature's agenda. While our problem is not bad like some smaller cities in Los Angeles were the gangs are used by corrupt city officials to control the area, we are seeing an escalating of gang problems and eventually could see a city like Midvale or West Valley fall.

Our course the legislature is doing stuff that will do nothing to stop the gang problem but their too blind to see it. In fact they are taking action on one hand and taking another action on the other hand that will make the situation worse.

First the legislature is in the process of passing a bill that will make it illegal for gang members to intimidate minors into joining or trying to get out. Talk about a bunch of hot air. With all the illegal activity that the gangs are involved in do you really think they care that the legislature passes this stupid bill? Is the legislature so blind that it actually thinks this will do any good?

Then on the other hand they are attempting to kill our best defense against kids becoming gang members.

The legislature is also trying to pass a measure that would eliminate or create a commission that would help eliminate any government agency from competing against private enterprise.

While this is one of those feel good propositions from the head of the Utah Taxpayers Association, in reality is will have consequences that could do severe long term damage.

A perfect example is community centers. They could be outlawed by this peace of legislation. Community Centers are our best line of defense against the lure of gangs. Kids want to be a part of something and feel cared for and the community centers provide that. If it is not available they look to the gangs for that feeling of being cared for. Even with the community centers it is a fierce battle.

Lets face it, many of the kids that can go to the community centers could not go to the same privately operated facilities. In fact many private places become havens for the gangs so it could be said that Stephenson is supporting gang activity.

Once again our state legislature is barking up the wrong tree but then again, what else is new?
